Common Excuses

Elementary, secondary, college students, or adults are often blamed for their own reading problems. Schools offer excuses when often it is instruction that is at fault. Some common excuses are:

  • can't handle phonics
  • has a processing problem
  • has dyslexia
  • has underachiever syndrome
  • has poor comprehension
  • has a perceptual problem
  • has a developmental lag
  • is not motivated
  • is immature
  • is learning disabled
  • is lazy
  • might have ADD
  • might catch on eventually
