Adult Reading Struggles

Adults describe the toll that reading struggles have taken on their lives.

  • I can recognize long words as long as I've seen and heard them over and over.
  • I can't move ahead. I would just have to start learning words all over again.
  • I won't take the promotion exam because I'm so afraid of doing poorly.
  • I have no confidence in my reading ability.
  • I have never read a book from cover to cover.
  • I get very little pleasure from reading.
  • I'd love to read better so I can be exposed to new ideas.
  • If I'm promoted it will just mean that I have more reading responsibilities.
  • I listen and memorize and ask a lot of questions.
  • Reading is too hard. I get the information from other people.
  • I dropped out of college. Reading was just too much of a struggle.
  • I'd like to be able to read and write reports.
  • I miss parts of words and substitute words. I just guess and keep moving.
  • I'm afraid people will find out that I don't read well.
  • I memorize the words I need and keep struggling with technical words.
